Get your dream job: How to make a successful networking call (by Alexander Stemplewski)

I’ve been stepping up my game here in landing my dream job as an actuary, and have a tip that you can use if you’re looking to jumpstart that sweet career you’ve had your eyes on too. If you’re more of a math-whiz than a smooth talker (like me), then this post should help you sound professional on the phone and help you make a successful networking call.

First off, I learned an interesting fact the other day: 60-75% of all jobs are found through networking. If you’ve been filling out countless applications to online job postings like I have, and spending all your time doing that… then stop putting all your eggs in one basket and take another, more effective approach: Networking.

Begin today, by making contact with someone within your network (LinkedIn contacts, employees from online directories, names from company websites) and use these tips to make a successful networking call with them:

  • Step 1: Introduce yourself and state your relationship to that contact  (if any)
  • Step 2: Ask for permission to continue – “Is now an okay time to speak with me?”
  • Step 3: Explain the purpose of your call – Likely you will be seeking advice, information or referrals
  • Step 4: Ask for cooperation – “Would you be willing to help me out?”
  • Step 5: Give them a brief summary of your background and what you are looking for
  • Step 6: Ask your question
  • Step 7: Thank them for their help

Here’s an example of a call I have made to a contact I found on an online directory working in the field that I desire:

Contact: Hello this is John.

Myself: Good afternoon, this is Alexander Stemplewski. I found your contact info on an online directory. Is this an okay time to have a word with me? (Steps 1, 2)

Contact: Sure.

Myself: Great. I’m calling to ask you a question. I am looking to begin my career as an actuary and I’d like to know if you’d be willing to help me out with some info? (Steps 3, 4)

Contact: Sure, what do you need?

Myself: Well, I earned my degree in Statistics and Applied Probability and have passed all 5 preliminary actuarial exams. I am looking to jumpstart my career with an entry-level position or an internship. Do you have any advice for someone in my position who is looking to enter the field and get things going. (Steps 5, 6)

Contact: Sure…. (awesome advice is given)

Myself: Thanks so much John, I really appreciate the help you’ve given me! Take care. (Steps 7)

And that’s the format. Use it to get some advice if you’re not sure how to get things started for yourself. Use it to ask for available openings, or to ask what companies are reputable that you can also contact. You can use it to ask what the best way to apply for an online job posting is, etc… Good luck on your job search
